The administration’s “temporary” travel ban is being marketed as a very good thing – stopping potential terrorists who would do us harm and stopping the mentally ill from bringing potential violence into our midst. A policy like this makes sense for a country that allows those on the No Fly terrorist watch list and those diagnosed with mentally illness by the U.S. government to legally purchase guns.
Real news alert!
Yes, the GOP controlled Congress believes that the right to bear arms trumps the reasonable restriction of keeping weapons out of the hands of potential terrorists and the mentally ill. After all, those two groups have rights, don’t they?
This is not fake news, this is a quote from Republican House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, as reported by USA Today: “(The regulation banning sale of guns to mentally ill) assumes that simply because an individual suffers from a mental condition, that individual is unfit to exercise his or her Second Amendment rights.” In addition, the NRA has successfully seen to it that being on the No Fly list with TSA shouldn’t get in the way of your weekend at the shooting range or weekend trip to the mall. So mental problems and terrorism might not be the toxic mix we’ve been led to believe. Seems they’re the ones at risk and deserve the right to defend themselves, with lethal force if necessary.
Um, yeah. The argument from Chairman Goodlatte (who shares a name with my favorite Starbucks order) is that mental illness should not be a barrier to buying a shiny new rifle for, you know, the avid sportsman out there. And I mean out there. So be on the look out in case one of these folks decides to “exercise” in your neighborhood. The argument only makes sense if the goal is increased sales of guns, both to these folks and the rest of us who now really need protection. And the No Fly list? It might have a misprint. So it can’t be used to delay someone’s instant access to a weapon. No Republican stopped to think, “On the other hand, the No Fly list could be right.”
So if just about anyone with a pulse and a few bucks cannot be denied a legal gun if they make it to our shores, maybe we should be more careful on who we let in. Of course, it is also true that the “bad ones” will ignore the law and come into our country anyway. All we’d be doing with a ban is keeping the good ones out. So any ban would only be an example of the terrorists winning. So who needs bans?
Maybe instead of banning refugees, IT professionals and students, we should think about banning what terrorists and the mentally ill (same thing) would be buying once they got here. Legal guns.
